The challenge

GQ Brasil's anniversary issue had a clear editorial mandate: a special comedy issue featuring 15 of the country's most relevant comedians. The creative challenge had nothing to do with concept. It had everything to do with logistics.

The talent was scattered between Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, all of them in the middle of active production schedules — recording shows, shooting projects, performing. There was no budget for elaborate sets, no time for full production days, and no room to pull anyone away from their commitments for long.

Two weeks. 15 portraits. Two cities. One consistent visual identity.

The solution had to be built around the constraint, not despite it.

The approach was simple by design. A white backdrop, a single well-crafted light setup, a lean crew. Temporary studios were assembled in dressing rooms and backstage spaces between takes, during breaks in recording, wherever a corner could be cleared.

What the set lacked in infrastructure, the direction made up for in energy. The creative focus shifted entirely onto the talent — their faces, their bodies, their instinct for performance. Comedians are trained to communicate with physicality. The brief was to push that: provocative poses, exaggerated expressions, images that felt like a punchline.

Shot across Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo with a tight crew, the production moved fast and stayed flexible. Each portrait had to work as a standalone image and as part of a cohesive editorial series.

Results

15 portraits delivered across two cities in two weeks, published in GQ Brasil's anniversary humor special.

A unified visual identity built from near-zero infrastructure — proof that strong art direction and sharp talent direction produce more than budget ever could.

The series demonstrated what editorial work at its best requires: a clear creative point of view, the ability to work fast under real constraints, and the confidence to let the concept drive the image.
